US President Donald Trump has announced that the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes, has been “permanently opened,” claiming that it will never again be blocked in the future.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump said the reopening of the strait would be welcomed by China, describing it as a move beneficial both to Beijing and the global economy.
“I have permanently opened the Strait of Hormuz. China will be very happy about it. I did it for their good and for the world’s good. Such a deadlock situation will never happen again,” Trump wrote.
He further stated that China had agreed not to supply arms to Iran and suggested that relations between Washington and Beijing were improving. Trump also added that he expected a warm meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his upcoming visit, emphasizing cooperation over conflict.
The remarks come amid heightened regional tensions, after Iran warned it could shut down not only the Strait of Hormuz but also disrupt all maritime trade in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Red Sea if US naval restrictions on Iranian ports continue.
According to reports cited by NBC News, Iran’s military leadership stated that any continued blockade would be considered a violation of the current ceasefire arrangements. Major General Ali Abdollahi, a senior Iranian military commander, warned that disruptions to Iranian commercial vessels and oil tankers would trigger broader regional consequences.
Earlier, Tehran had signaled the possibility of expanding maritime restrictions in response to US pressure, raising fears of a wider disruption in global energy and shipping routes.
