Putin Warns of Consequences if Nuclear Weapons Used Against Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin has commented on the potential consequences of a nuclear strike against Russia, warning that adversaries likely understand the severe ramifications.

“Moscow’s opponents have probably realized what the ultimate outcome could be if any attack using nuclear components is carried out against the Russian armed forces,” Putin said during a meeting with officials from Russia’s FSB, the country’s main security agency and successor to the Soviet-era KGB.

The remarks follow a warning from Russia’s foreign intelligence service, the SVR, that certain technologies for nuclear weapons production could potentially reach Ukraine—a development that has raised Moscow’s concern.

Russia updated its nuclear doctrine in 2024, outlining the circumstances under which it might deploy nuclear weapons. The country maintains that it views its nuclear arsenal primarily as a deterrent to prevent attacks by adversaries.

Putin’s statements underscore ongoing tensions over nuclear capabilities amid the broader geopolitical conflict in the region.
