At least 24 people were killed and 19 others injured in a Russian airstrike on the village of Yarova in eastern Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed. Most of the victims were civilians who had gathered to collect their pensions.
Regional administrator Vadym Filashkin said rescue operations were underway and urged residents to move to safer areas. Yarova lies close to the frontline, where Russian forces have been gradually advancing.
The strike occurred at around 10:40 a.m. local time on Tuesday, hitting during the pension distribution. Many of the victims were elderly citizens. Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko described it as a “targeted air-dropped bomb attack.” A postal service vehicle was also damaged in the strike.
Zelensky condemned the attack as “brutal” and called on the United States, Europe, and G20 nations to deliver a strong response. Meanwhile, Russian shelling in other parts of the Donetsk region killed an additional three people.
